We hope that the decision not to include shooting at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games is revised especially as it is in a city with such a rich history of UK firearms manufacturing and shooting sports. Please make some noise about this if you feel the same, use social media, write to your MPs and those organising the Games.
It is understood that the decision to remove Shooting from the Games (for the first time since 1970) was due to the venue at Bisley being too far away. It also came to light that the chosen Velodrome will be in London which is further away and they’ll be building a new £60m Aquatic Centre in Birmingham itself.
Birmingham has a history of gun making and it is of course home to the area known as the Gun Quarter due to the gun manufacturers who came to Birmingham in the 1600s. One of only two UK proof houses is also based in Birmingham.
Despite there being very little coverage of the shooting sports on TV, we hope people have been inspired to get out to their local shooting range or ground – whether you’ve shot before or have never tried out any shooting! Remember, you can find ranges and grounds near you in our directory.
Let us know what you thought about the Games, the results, coverage and if you or someone you know has been inspired!
